Peter Cundall

A Life in Words

Peter Cundall was born in LA to English parents. He had half his childhood between Malibu and Santa Monica and was then brought to Hull – the first of many life changing experiences.

A year later he came to London for the second half of his childhood and what little conventional education he had before becoming an errand boy in an ad agency to help his parents pay the rent.

He progressed into Production, then Traffic. And on into his next 5 years which supplied a helpfully unusual palette for the writer-to-be: Including playing semi-professionally in jazz bands, being a lifeguard, labouring, serving in HQ Bomber Command and travelling overland to Sri Lanka the hard way – while it was still an adventure.

He was also briefly a co-owner of a restaurant in Holland Park, did some journalism and photography. And then, at last, decided he wanted to do just one thing as well as he could.

One year later he was living in New York and a writer in J. Walter Thompson, then the world’s largest ad agency.
